Tenerife and the Canary Islands
When fed up with the greyness and cold winds of Britain, Tenerife and the other Canary Islands are the perfect remedy.
They are further away than you'd think, being off the coast of Western Sahara. But this ensures that the temperature rarely drops below the mid-twenties and the trade-winds mean it never goes above the mid-thirties.
Because the islands are Spanish, there is that laid-back Southern European, maƱana feel. Of course, there are loads of beaches and they all lead into the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Great for swimming or just looking at.
Though probably more pricey than they once were, there are some cheapish places to eat and drink. The flights are very reasonable and there is well priced accommodation for short or long stays.
This means they still appeals to artists and writers. People who want to get away from the cold and busy industrialised areas of Northern Europe. Or anyone who fancies having year-round good weather.
Despite the tourism and developments, the Canaries are still a beautiful. Very tempting as a writer’s escape when faced with the greyness of Northern England.
