Open Water

Being on the edge of the Lake District has many benefits (though the cost is the mountain weather). One of the big pluses is the ability to visit a lake or mountain at short notice.

Before lockdown, we'd often pop across to one of our favourite hills for an afternoon or morning's walk, just to clear our heads ready for a bout of writing.

But since the restrictions have eased we've picked up a new hobby. Though I would never call it Wild Swimming - that sounds far too adventurous for what we do - we have got into open water swimming.

There are lots of safe places to do this in the Lake District and we've supplemented our old wetsuits - bought cheap at the end of last year's beach holiday - with swim floats and hats, just so we don't get mowed down by the pleasure boats.

So now we sometimes pop across to one of our favourite lakes for an afternoon or morning's outdoor swim. Though bracing, it's lots of fun and it sets you up nicely for a session of writing.
