Retreat Weekend

I spent this weekend at Rookhow Hostel on a retreat with the drumming band I am a member of. It was a wonderful time and we had two days of various activities including a writing session that I ran.

Rookhow is set in woodland in a forgotten corner of the Lake District. It is very quiet with no phone signal and no towns or villages nearby. There are paths into the woods where there is a yurt (that some of the group stayed in) and places to sit and enjoy the trees.

The writing session was on Saturday morning. Although I'm not a fan of early starts, it was good to get up, have a decent breakfast and wrap up well before walking out into the woodland.

We were only a small group but we had a lovely time. I used a few different techniques to encourage writing and everyone fully engaged, coming up with some fabulous material. They were happy to share as well, which is not always the case. It was lovely reading our work in a such peaceful setting.

By the end of it, we were all cold but energised. I definitely want to try that again. There is something magical about poetry at first light in woodland.
